True confession time: I love TV. Highbrow, low brow, good, bad, it doesn't matter. Give me that window on the world. Bring those people into my living room.
Being part of the unwashed masses (well, at least the latter part), the People's Choice Awards are a lot of fun for me. Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men did a fine job of hosting. Line of the night: Sheen on the absence of his father Martin Sheen (West Wing) — "he's probably out walking a grocery store picket line." In fact, Sheen had most of the best lines, although I could be prejudiced by the fact that he has one of the best deadpan deliveries in the business.
Most revealing dress of the night was worn by Amber Tamblyn, who is all of 20. I remember the day she arrived on General Hospital. She was 12 then. Like the stereotypical middleaged mom, I can't adjust to her maturity. Speaking of children, most adorable moment of the night was Ray Romano bringing his 11-year-old twin boys onstage with him. The moment was scripted but the boys played along well. As Romano tried to speak, they interrupted to whisper in his ear and demand first their game boys and then their connecting cable. Romano fussed as only he can do. It reminded me of my own 12-year-old twins. In fact, it's true confession time again. One of the child actors on Everybody Loves Raymond has visited my house on occasion and declared us the funniest family.
Still speaking of children, the young actor of Two and a Half Men, Angus T. Jones, was marvelous. He delivered the acceptance speech for Two and a Half Men as Best New Comedy and did so flawlessly.. I hope he doesn't lose that panache as he grows up.
Biggest surprise of the night: Lord of the Rings being beaten by Pirates of the Caribbean. Pirates would have been my choice but I would have thought I was in the minority.
