Best Costume Design
No real surprises, but you have to appreciate the irony of a movie about a nude revue getting this nod.
Best Art Direction
Another movie strangely missing from the geeky nods (FX & sound) at least gets some props here.
Best Editing
One unexpected nod for Munich.
Best Cinematography
Although I wasn't totally surprised since the ASC also gave it a nod, I was very happy to see Batman Begins get some love here.
Best Adapted Screenplay
I'm glad my "dark horse" made it in, but it happened because of something weird that happened in the next category...
Best Original Screenplay
I thought Syriana would take Munich's spot in Adapted, but apparently (according to the IMDB, anyway) it's not "based" on Robert Baer's CIA memoir but merely "suggested" by it.
Best Director
Here's one of the places where I underestimated Crash and overestimated History.
Best Supporting Actress
This is where the Academy followed SAG to the letter.
Best Supporting Actor
Somehow nailed this one though I think this is one of the more loopy races this year.
Best Actress
The only real surprise here was that Knightley got in at the expense of Allen instead of Theron.
Best Actor
I don't know why, but I've always been particularly good at nailing this one. I'm glad Terrence Howard made it, though. It seemed unlikely right up until the last minute, especially without SAG love.
Best Picture
This was actually one of my weakest categories. Again we have the Crash/History flip, and I underestimated Munich's chances, which is a pleasant surprise. Though I have to wonder how many votes Walk the Line was out of it, since it seemed like more of a slam dunk than any of these three.
I'll be posting my official Oscar Preview during February.
