Ownage! Dave Reacts to the Oscar Nods

I underestimated Crash and overestimated A History of Violence. And we'll ignore for now the fact that Memoirs of a Geisha got six nods. But my predictions were 82.5% accurate, and completely accurate for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, thus proving that I'm a hopelessly addicted awards geek. So let's delve further into the obsession, shall we?

Best Doc

Just when I thought I'd seen all of the docs this year, the Academy manages to pull two out of its ass: Darwin's Nightmare and Street Fight. I'm actually glad that docs without much buzz still get a shot, but these are hard pressed to be better than The Aristocrats or Grizzly Man, which weren't even eligible.

Best Foreign

I'm surprised Cache didn't make it, not surprised that Paradise Now did, but how it will fare against a Holocaust-era drama (that takes place in Munich, no less) is another matter. I'm sort of surprised Tsotsi got in, but I kind of like it's chances now.

Best Animated

I'm glad they kept it to the three frontrunners, sparing us nods for Robots, Madagascar, or Chicken Little.

Best FX

How does Star Wars III not get in here over Chroni-What-Cles, which had nice FX, but please! I've got plenty of issues with Sith, but technical nods are not one of them. The opening sequence alone puts it up against Kong. But no sound. No FX. Just make-up, which was probably the least impressive technical aspect.

Best Sound/Sound Editing

Does Memoirs of a Geisha have incredible sound? It got nods in both Sound and Sound Editing.

Best Makeup

As usual, some obvious nods are overlooked. Transamerica. Fantastic Four. But Chroni-What-Cles does have some decent make-up, Mr. Tumnus, in particular.

Best Music Song/Score

This may be the happiest part of the nods for me. Only three songs nominated. Do you know what that means? Only three songs to sit through during the show! And one of them may be halfway decent (Terrence Howard rapping), though for my money "Whoop That Trick" is a better tune. And in case you were wondering, this is not the first time John Williams has competed against himself for Best Score, it's the ninth time.
