The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the nominees for the 84th Academy Awards. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is the most nominated film with 11 bids, followed by The Artist, with 10. The Oscars will be aired live on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 26. Below, the contenders in the 10 major categories:
BEST PICTURE:
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
The Favourite: Expect The Artist to outshine the competition.
BEST DIRECTOR:
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life
The Favourite: The Artist’s Michel Hazanavicius seems poised to cop his first win. Steven Spielberg being snubbed for War Horse is a mild shocker.
BEST ACTOR:
Demián Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Brad Pitt, Moneyball
The Favourite: Having won for Syriana a few years back, George Clooney is now well on his way to Oscar #2.
BEST ACTRESS:
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn
The Favourite: Too close to call – the Davis vs. Streep contest will go down to the wire. Notice how Rooney Mara snatched that coveted last spot ahead of Young Adult’s Charlize Theron.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Kenneth Branagh, My Week With Marilyn
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Nick Nolte, Warrior
Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Max Von Sydow, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Favourite: Plummer is highly deserving of the award, but Nick Nolte is a worthy darkhorse in my book.

No one got snubbed because no one is entitled to a nomination.
Not sure about Tintin as upset. MoCap hasn't been embraced like traditional and CGI animation. Plus, the animators are out in New Zealand, so less chance to schmooze with voters

No one is entitled, true. But there are those deserving actors who were surprisingly overlooked by voters.
