Nickelodeon's 19th Annual Kids' Choice Awards

As Nickelodeon has seeped into the fabric of American childhood (and parenthood) over the last two and a half decades, the network's annual Kids' Choice Awards has taken on the stature of ... a ... really important kids' award show ... okay, a mini-Oscars.

Jack Black, fresh off his obliquely dramatic role as the maniacally driven, unscrupulous filmmaker Carl Denham in Peter Jackson's King Kong — and coincidentally, also the title star of Nacho Libre, a Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies/Black & White Productions comedy opening this June — will host Nickelodeon's 19th Annual Kids' Choice Awards, Saturday, April 1, when the tots honor their favorites from the worlds of film, music, sports and television in a star-packed, messy, noisy, slime-filled live telecast from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.

The level of talent participating in the show each year is a testament to the clout of the network and its ability to marshall the kids/parents market behind annointed projects, performers, causes, and the like. Some of the celebrities who have appeared on the show include Brad Pitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Mel Gibson, Robert DeNiro, Madonna, 'NSYNC, Eddie Murphy, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Britney Spears, Adam Sandler, Mike Meyers, Britanny Murphy, L.L. Cool J, Tim Allen, James Earl Jones, Cindy Crawford, Shaquille ONeal, and Aerosmith.

The film Madagascar topped the list this year, accruing three nominations for favorite animated movie and favorite voices from an animated movie (Chris Rock and Ben Stiller), Robots received two for favorite animated movie and favorite voice from an animated movie (Robin Williams). Will Smith picked up a pair of noms for favorite movie actor and favorite male singer, and Mariah Carey notched two for favorite female singer and favorite song ("We Belong Together").

Two nominations went to Green Day, too, in the favorite music group and favorite song ("Wake Me Up When September Ends") categories, while Drake & Josh and That's So Raven both got dual nods for favorite television show and for favorite TV actor (the recently injured Drake Bell) and favorite TV actress (Raven Symone). Harry Potter nabbed a pair for favorite movie (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and favorite book (the series).

Kids will be able to vote in a total of 16 categories, and surprise awards also will be announced during the show. Voting begins online March 6 on Nick.com. Beginning the week of March 13, "special" new categories will be featured on-air each week.

Leading up to the Award show, TurboNick, Nickelodeon's broadband video service on Nick.com, will feature a Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards playlist, along with various clips from past awards shows and current promotions for the 19th Annual Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards. Free promotional Podcasts will be available on Nick.com for various media players, including exclusive Jack Black video nonsense.

Is it bad if I admit that I still kind of enjoy watching this awards show even though I am definitely not a kid?
