News Bites: Keep Coming Back, Spielberg and Oldboy, Captain America's Director, Spoofing Spoofs

Part of: News Bites

As I always try to look for some new way to expand my offerings, I have decided to keep an eye out across the world of entertainment news and try my hand at news reporting/commentary on stories that catch my eye. Obviously, I cannot cover everything. What I will do is catch whatever I can as I can and hope that it delivers something new to you.

Macy to Direct Keep Coming Back

Variety is reporting that William H. Macy will be making his big screen directorial debut with a project titled Keep Coming Back. I don't know about you, but this is a film I'll be interested in seeing when it makes its appearance.

Macy is a wonderful actor who has had memorable roles in a number of films, not the least of which is Fargo. He was also the only bright spot in the dreadful Psycho remake. He is one of the better character actors working and it will be interesting to see how well he makes the transition to being behind the camera. I suspect that it will be a smooth transition, with the knowledge he must have picked up over the years.

The film tells the story of a man with a sheltered life who joins Alcoholics Anonymous in order to seduce the woman of his dreams, a former stripper set to be played by Milla Jovovich. Macy will also be on screen along with Steve Buscemi.

Spielberg and Smith Talk Oldboy

On one hand this is interesting news but on the other I find it disturbing. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in talks to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook Park's Oldboy, according to Variety. This teaming just does not strike me as an ideal one for this insane film.

The original Korean film is an intense journey into revenge and tragedy. In it a man is kidnapped and held prisoner in a room for fifteen years with no word as to why he is there. One day he is released and set on a course to find the man responsible for his imprisonment. The thing is, he only has a couple of days in which to do so before something else happens. The journey leads to devastating discoveries that will have lasting effects on all involved.

With Spielberg and Smith I have a sinking feeling that the original story will be softened for a PG-13 rating, resulting in a loss of impact, not to mention a need to cut some of the more graphic moments of the film.

Still, if this project does come to fruition, I am sure I will be there to see how it will turn out. Who knows, perhaps they will reimagine it in such a way that it becomes a classic in its own right, sort of like the relationship between Infernal Affairs and The Departed. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and check out the original Oldboy, along with the other two of Park's Vengeance films: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance.

Buscemi and Macy? That should get interesting...
Btw, any word on lead for Capt. America? Mark Valley looks like him and has the background to play the part.

No word on Cap that I have seen. The news did mention a sense of urgency to cast, as he will have to jump from this right to Avengers and want him to get up to speed.5 years ago I would have said Neil McDonough.
