News Bites: Forbidden Planet Remake, The Three Stooges, The Expendables, Sideways Remake

Part of: News Bites

As I always try to look for some new way to expand my offerings, I have decided to keep an eye out across the world of entertainment news and try my hand at news reporting/commentary on stories that catch my eye. Obviously, I cannot cover everything. What I will do is catch whatever I can as I can and hope that it delivers something new to you.

Forbidden Planet Remake Has a Writer

Here is some news that is sure to initially make movie-lovers upset but once considered may end up causing a substantial amount of curiosity. At least that is how I saw it. ComingSoon.net is reporting that J. Michael Straczynski is taking a shot at writing a script for a Forbidden Planet remake for Warner Brothers.

It seems like only a matter of time before all classic cinema will be remade, just wait for Citizen Kane and Birth of a Nation, it's just a matter of time. Of course, wouldn't a new Forbidden Planet just be yet another take on Shakespeare's The Tempest?

Isn't Shakespeare the most adapted author ever? I guess this remake wouldn't sound as enticing if it was billed as another Shakespeare adaptation. At least billing it as a new Forbidden Planet allows them to bring in ray guns, spaceships, and other science fiction trappings.

Honestly, if anyone can write a worthy script, it is likely going to be Straczynski. He has done some great things in the science fiction world (see Babylon 5) and more recently delivered a strong script in the world of drama with Changeling. I am intrigued by what he could offer here.

The Farrelly Brothers to Direct a Three Stooges Film

Here is a bit of news that I cannot say makes me very happy. MGM is moving forward with plans for a new Three Stooges film with the Farrelly Brothers at the helm. When I initially saw this report on ComingSoon.net all I could muster was: "Wow."

One of the Farrellys (unspecified) is quoted as saying: "Movie goers today deserve their own Stooges and we look forward to introducing them to a new generation of knuckleheads."

What exactly does that mean? Are they saying that no one can be introduced to the original Stooges anymore? The idea of making such a film just seems like a bad idea. Seriously, the Three Stooges are not movie characters. They were a comedy team who made movies, much like Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, and Abbott and Costello.

The idea of casting Larry, Moe, and Curly (and perhaps Shemp and Curly Joe?) is a terrible idea. Again, they are not movie characters but a comedy team. I am not against remakes, but this is an idea I cannot get behind. I am sure if it gets made I will check it out, but at this time I will not support it (for what that is worth).
