As I always try to look for some new way to expand my offerings, I have decided to keep an eye out across the world of entertainment news and try my hand at news reporting/commentary on stories that catch my eye. Obviously, I cannot cover everything. What I will do is catch whatever I can as I can and hope that it delivers something new to you.
Shooting at Benjamin Button
Here is a piece of insane news being reported at Worst Previews—a man was shot in a Philadelphia movie theater during a screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The reason for the shooting? It turns out the victim was talking. I know the first reaction is to give a little stifled chuckle, but this is seriously messed up.
As the story goes, the shooter turned around to quiet a father and son sitting behind him who were talking. They did not listen and he turned around again, this time throwing some popcorn. The incident escalated to where 29-year-old James Joseph Cialella Jr. pulled a gun and shot the father in the arm. Theater patrons fled for the exits and the shooter just sat back down and continued watching the movie.
This is insane. I know that I have dreamed of doing something extreme due to the annoyance of talkers, but never would I do anything like this. This is a good indication of someone in need of some serious medication. Cialella has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons violations.
While this guy's actions are inexcusable and I hope he gets what is coming to him, it does bring up the serious issue of talking at the movies. It drives me nuts, as do phone calls and texting (those screens are really freaking bright). People need to show a little respect when they are in the darkened room, there are others present. Sit there and enjoy the movie, no one wants your witty comments, banter, or to listen to conversations with your neighbor. So please, shut up!
Judge Rules in Favor of Fox Over Watchmen
The case does not even enter court until sometime in January, but on the eve of Christmas a judge released a five page written order granting Fox copyright interest in the Watchmen film shot by Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures. This does not bode well for the release of the film and messing with that date is not a good thing. The news of this ruling comes from The New York Times.
Back in the 1980s, Fox bought the rights to make a film adaptation of the comic, which they took to Lawrence Gordon. The project fell through and Gordon went to Paramount and finally Warner Brothers where it was eventually shot. It was believed that Gordon held the rights when Warner bought them from him. Fox kept quiet the whole time, letting the film get made and promotion get started before speaking up and claiming they owned the copyright. Fox went to the courts, seeking to stop the pending March release. The issue gets even a little more complicated as Paramount is still involved as the overseas distributor.
