How times change, two weeks ago we had no releases, last week there was but one, this week the flood gates have opened and there is a deluge of new releases to pick from. Some good, and some not so good. Let's take a look at what the local cinema has to offer this week:
Assault on Precinct 13. A remake of a remake? The original was a remake of Rio Bravo, Carpenter remade it again as Ghosts of Mars, now we have a more or less direct remake of the original remake. It stars Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne, and it looks halfway decent. I've heard some good word that it is an intense battle. I hope so.
Coach Carter. Samuel L. Jackson stars in this "based on a true story" tale of an inspirational high school basketball coach. I think that the trailers look rather corny, but I like Jackson so I may have to give it a shot, but there are a few others before it.
Elektra. I love Jennifer Garner, so this is a must, plus I like the trailers. It is a comic adaptation, duh, and a spinoff of last year's Daredevil. We get to delve further into the life of everyone's favorite assassin.
House of Flying Daggers. This is the one I have been waiting for. Zhang Yimou's follow up to the absolutely gorgeous Hero, and I have heard that it is even better. It stars Zhang Ziyi and Andy Lau. I am not sure what the tale is about, other than I cannot wait to see it, now I have that chance.
In Good Company. This looks good, and from what I have read, it is. It stars Topher Grace, Dennis Quaid, and Scarlet Johannssen. It is the story of a young ad executive who is brought in as the boss of Quaid's older and wiser exec, and of course the new guy starts a relationship with his underling's daughter. I am looking forward to this.
Racing Stripes. In the tradition of Babe, Mister Ed, and all the other talking animals, we now have a talking zebra. Probably not a good movie, but looks as if it may be enjoyable enough for the kids. It features an all star voice cast including Frankie Muniz, Dustin Hoffman, David Spade, Steve Harvey, and Snoop Dogg.
