This week Hollywood is not waiting for Friday to release their new wares. With Friday being Independence Day, the new releases have been pushed up to Wednesday. Will it help them? Sure! A couple extra days for people to go see them and spread the word never hurts, unless your film is flat out awful, but if that were the case you would not be seeing the Wednesday releases. Anyway, I hope you have a great holiday and enjoy some movie time! (Go see Wall*E!)
Hancock. (2008, 92 minutes, PG-13, action, trailer) Will Smith returns to the holiday he made famous — or rather, the holiday that has seen an impressive string of hits from him. Will Hancock be another notch on the belt? Something tells me the answer will be yes. The bigger question, the more important question, is whether or not this is going to be a good movie. I have avoided reading any reviews, but the consensus I have gathered through other means is that it is not that good. Also, it is a "hard" PG-13, with many saying this was clearly meant to be an R-rated film, so those with little ones may want to investigate first. Smith stars as Hancock, a mean-spirited, drunken "superhero" who does "good" things with little thought to the repercussions of his methods. The trailers look good, and I will remain optimistic until I see it. Joining Smith are Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, working under the direction of Peter Berg.
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. (2008, 91 minutes, G, comedy, trailer) When I first saw the trailer for this film (and I think I only saw it the one time), I was reminded of last year's Nancy Drew. The two films seem to have similar adventurous tones with comedic undercurrents, while targeting the family and young girl audience. I can also say that I did not have much interest in it, that is until I saw that it was getting good notices from critics like Roger Ebert (whose work I love). So, perhaps I will give this a shot and hope for the best. Abigail Breslin stars as the title character, a young girl who has a big heart and shows it in a variety of ways. In this case, she helps a couple of hobos who become the target of a burglary investigation. It is up to Kit to try and help, while also coping with her father's loss of work and the danger of losing their home. Chris O'Donnell, Julia Ormond, Wallace Shawn, and Joan Cusack co-star.
