I have to be honest. I am a little tired of these paltry one and two releases a week that have grouped up this year. The way they have been spaced and the few releases, this year just doesn't feel as big as last year. Hopefully this week's only release will turn things around.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. (2006, 151 minutes, PG-13, action/comedy, trailer) Possibly the most anticipated movie of the year, and widely believed to take the box office crown of 2006 is upon us. Just about everybody I have talked to is interested in seeing this movie. It is a sequel to the absolute surprise hit of 2004, which also gave Johnny Depp his first Oscar nomination.
The sequel reunites Depp with co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as director Gore Verbinski. This pirate adventure has Davey Jones (Bill Nighy) coming to collect a blood debt owed by Captain Jack Sparrow, who manages to disrupt the wedding vows of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Originally, I was worried this might not live up to the original, but I have to admit to being a bit giddy every time I see a commercial. It looks like it is going to be a blast.
Following Sean. (2005, 87 minutes, NR, documentary, trailer) Director Ralph Arlyck made a short film in the 1960s while living downstairs from a group of hippies, including the 4 year old Sean, who boasted of smoking marijuana. This film has Arlyck tracking down Sean three decades later. This is beginning a run at the local arthouse.
Mountain Patrol: Kekexili. (2006, 92 minutes, NR, drama, trailer) This film, from China, looks at the Kekexili region of Tibet and the people's struggle to protect the antelope from poachers. It follows a reporter who convinces the local leaders he could help make the area a protected preserve, and accompanies them on their patrol through the region. I have heard many good things about this. This will be playing for most of the week at the local arthouse.
