New Movie Releases: 6/3/05

Part of: New Movies

The march towards the thick summer movie season is on. Will Episode III be dethroned this week? I'm not so sure it will, but we are getting an early Oscar type contender.

Cinderella Man. Ron Howard and Russell Crowe team up again, this time on a depression era bio-pic about a boxer who captured the minds and hearts of those around him. It looks like it could be a very good film, but at the same time it looks like an Oscar grab. It also stars Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti. I plan on giving this one a shot.

Lords of Dogtown. There was a documentary a few years ago which had a lot of good word surrounding it called Dogtown and Z-Boys, now we are getting the fictionalized version. I must admit to being very tired of seeing the seemingly endless commercials and trailers, but at the same time it looks like it could be a fun movie. In case you are not familiar, this is about a group of surfers in southern California who take skateboarding by storm. It stars Heath Ledger.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Not sure what to think about this one, I am clearly not targeted as the audience. At the same time, however, early word seems to be good. The story is about 4 girls about to embark on life changing summer vacations, all connected by a common pair of jeans. I think the title could have been better. Features Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia, The Ring) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, Sin City).

The Future of Food. A documentary which only has 1 screening. It is about the current state of farming in the US and how the food that is on your table comes into being. May be a good film, but not one which I am expecting to attend.

Until next week!

Dogtown & the Z-Boys was a terrific documentary...so good in fact that it makes me hesitant to actually go see Lords of Dogtown a). because it might seem repetitious and b). see the 'real-thing", don't need to see the fictionalized copy.

Dogtown & the Z-Boys is well worth your time.
