New DVDs for April 27, 2004

Part of: New DVDs

Since this is Tuesday, it must be time for more new DVDs!

This Tuesday, another prolific distributor unleashes a mighty crop, and a few studios put out two-fers. Also, a super-secret surprise bonus — a western! Well, not so secret, really, just less-than-common.

I'm also introducing a new feature this week — semi-random recommendations. Each week, I'll be marking five specific DVDs with an asterisk that looks something like this: * When you see that asterisk, translate it to mean, "Phillip sez Check It Out!" But be warned, I'll be marking some discs I haven't even seen. Like Love, Actually. Still, it comes recommended to me, so I'm passing it on. Check It Out!

Enough chit-chat, let's get to the discs!

I forgot the Amazon links at first, but adding them in gives me an opportunity to mention Kids In The Hall hitting DVD at last. Woohoo!

Philip, I've seen those Alpha viddies in the store and they look like those really cheapo, badly done public domain things that are horrible quality.

Have you seen any of them? If so, what's the rap?

Add an asterisk from me for Ghosts Of The Abyss, James Cameron's Titanic documentary (documentary=no cheesy love story) first featured at IMAX theaters last year. I haven't seen the DVD, but I saw the feature last year and can highly, highly recommend it. It's informative and beautifully filmed. Pair this with the National Geographic set on Titanic and you have all you'd ever need to watch about the Titanic tragedy - you can toss out Titanic, unless you want to watch the love Kate Winslet cavort, or want to watch Leonardo die again (and who doesn't, really?)

Tom, I only allow myself five picks, and if I was going to bump my double-disc pick, I'd still probably go with Kids in the Hall before Ghosts. Then again, I haven't seen Ghosts, either. Next week is going to really suck; I've already spotted almost a dozen I like. :-(

Shark, My impression is the same as yours, though I try to keep the editorializing within the post to a minimum. Since I'm editorializing here, I'll add a general "stay the heck away" to anything from Goodtimes as well.

Heh. Nightmares Come At Night. Gotta love Jesus Franco, man. That has to be one of my favourite movie titles ever. Nightmares Come At Night indeed. I look forward to a hollywood sequel. Dreams Happen When One Sleeps, perhaps?

All of Alphas stuff can be bought dirt cheap at www.oldies.com

You can't beat the price, but you get what you pay for. They are a very small company that promises to release better discs when they get some real money. They have released some very obscure stuff that has never been available before (even on VHS!), but the quality is as expected. I own about 10 of their discs simply because of the price.

Also, Phil missed the excellent Wrestlemania 20 3-dsic set. For that, your fired. =:)

Kids In The Hall: Complete Season 1 [A&E Video]*

    There, I've added an asterisk.

I don't know how good the dvd is, but the comedy of the show alone should be good enough as a collection. If you're looking for a more "no-holds-barred" version of SNL, Kids in the Hall would be it.
