New DVD & Blu-ray Releases for 07/14/09

July 14th has quite a few new releases in stock for us. Feature film releases this week kick off with The Haunting In Connecticut (Lionsgate) – available Unrated (with bonus Digital Copy), in a rated Single Disc version, and a Blu-ray edition as well. David Carradine fans will want to snag a copy of Break (Cinema Epoch), one of the last projects the late actor completed before his death last month (which co-stars Michael Madsen).

Additional releases of interest are The Edge Of Love with Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller on DVD and BD (Image Entertainment); Van Wilder: Freshman Year (Unrated) from Paramount, Dennis Quaid and Ziyi Zhang in the barely-hyped Horsemen (Lionsgate). For All Mankind is the next in the long line of superior DVD and Blu-ray releases from the Criterion Collection, while Sony brings us a new Russian flick entitled 12.

Blu-ray owners take note: The Towering Inferno is here at long last from 20th Century Fox. Sony also brings a few of its catalogue titles to the HD playing field with a three-pack of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Curse of the Golden Flower, and House of Flying Daggers Trilogy.

Animation lovers will be pleased to know that G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Season 1.1 (from Shout! Factory - who else?) is invading our homes today. A few Anime releases include Claymore, Vol. 6 – The Awakening (Funimation) and two versions of Bleach - Uncut Box Set, Vol. 3 (Viz Video): one a standalone issue, the other a Limited Edition with a Collector’s Hollow mask.

Titles such as Michael Jackson: The Trial And Triumph Of The King Of Pop (Rock City Entertainment), 2008-2009 NBA Champions: Los Angeles Lakers (Warner), and New Kids On The Block: Hangin’ Tough Live (Cherry Red) fall instantly into the prestigious “special interest” category for most of us.

Lastly, the kiddies will drive you nuts by constantly watching and re-watching titles like Ni Hao Kai-Lan: Kai-Lan’s Great Trip To China (Nickelodeon), The Wiggles Go Bananas! (Warner), Thomas & Friends: Percy and the Bandstand (Lyons/Hit Entertainment)—so be sure to conveniently lose the stereo remote when you purchase these.
