Movie Review: Transformers

The battle between two races of robotic aliens has been raging for centuries. The good Autobots and the evil Decepticons bring their war to Earth and only an average teenager holds the key to bringing it to an end.

The backstory of this highly anticipated summer blockbuster movie is quite simple. In the beginning the Autobots always held to the ideals of defending life and aspired to a peaceful existence. They consisted of their leader Optimus Prime the 18-wheeler tractor, BumbleBee the classic Camaro (formerly Volkswagen Beetle), Autobot Jazz the Pontiac Solstice, Autobot Ratchet the Hummer H2, and IronHide the GMC TopKick 6500 pickup truck.

The Decepticons believed in controlling the universe by destroying anything in their way. They consisted of their leader Megatron the Alien Jet, Starscream the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor Jet, Barricade the Police car (Saleen S281), Bonecrusher the Mine Protected Clearance vehicle, Skorponok the Mechanical Scorpion, Decepticon Frenzy the Boom Box, and Blackout (formerly Vortex) the JM Pave Helicopter. The two groups have been in an intergalactic war for centuries over possession of the Cube which holds the ultimate powers of the universe. The Cube was lost in space, but somehow found its way to Earth.

The story on Earth begins with Sam Witwickey (Shia LaBeouf), a high school student caught up in the life of cars and girls. As a reward for good grades in school he is promised a car by his parents Ron and Judy (Kevin Dunn and Julie White). His father takes him to a fast-talking car salesman (Bernie Mac) who sells Sam an aggressive Chevy Camaro (BumbleBee). This Camaro is such a cool car it attracts the high school hottie Mikaela (Megan Fox). She's a car enthusiast and is fascinated by the strange things that happen in this car with Sam, such as the car driving itself. As these things raise her curiosity about the car, the two kids become very close. Once they figure out that this car is some sort of alien, the fun begins. The two kids team up with the Autobots to find the Cube and save Earth from the demonic Decepticons.

I guess Volkswagen doesn't want the advertising. It was nice how they shoved an old, beat up yellow bug in the movie just as a knock to the ribs.

That concept Camaro sure looked good though!

Spielberg was actually an executive producer, and they have little to no involvement with a film other than the deals to get them made.

The comment circulating in the theatre early in the film was "these are high-tech, super intelligent aliens, why the hell would they want to be GM cars?"

But it was as well done as I think a live action transformers movie could be. I do have to say that the final fight scene caused me to fall asleep. There was so much action it just numbed my senses and I nodded off.

It was a fun popcorn flick (I went in with no illusions that it could be some great film), but it needed to show more Bots and less humans. Too much time is spent with Shia Laboeuf, his woman, and other humans like the Sector 7 guy.

For Autobots, I think we only got 5 Autobots, is that right? Too low of a number in my opinion.
