Movie Review: The Matador

1/5

Oh, so awful. I should have known better.

Pierce Brosnan is Julian Noble, an expensive hitman who is experiencing panic attacks and is screwing up his assassinations. While in Mexico, he chances upon businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear), who we later learn is anxious about losing a deal to a competing company. Noble goes out of his way to make friends with Danny, in order to get his assistance in killing a target. His martini is shaken not stirred and Bond-esque music sounds out as preludes to his kills...

It's unfortunate that Pierce Brosnan can't shake the spy/crafty bad guy image. The idea of a washed up hitman, with no real friends in the world, who tries to recruit help in bumping off people, is so incredibly lame.

There is no real plot, no big twist. The small twist isn't all that interesting. It's absolutely pathetic to see a bankable star like Brosnan act in such junk, knowing that his fans from the Bond days will buy tickets. In reality, as huge a star as Pierce Brosnan was at his peak, he was never a superb actor. It's doubtful he has an Oscar nomination in him or even a Golden Globe.

Matador is not as fun as the inept After The Sunset, which was really more of a travelogue for the Bahamas, but it is equally forgettable.

I saw this yesterday and actually liked it! Noble struck me as a guy who was having trouble with the realization that he is getting old, which results in the panic attacks, plus the fact that he has no real friends or home, he is reaching out in broad grasping strokes to find something to hold onto. He ends up falling for the stability of Wright's family. I don't feel he was trying to recruit Wright to help him, rather he thiought that if he included him perhaps he coul;d cultivate a friendship.

Not a great film, but pretty solid and quirky. Did you know Brosnan was up for a Globe for this? Not sure if he deserved it, but there it is.

Brosnan was in an excellent movie set in Africa a few years ago called, I believe, "Mister Johnson".

I can't remember the name, but wasn't he also in a film set in Ireland where he played a single Dad?

I missed Mister Johnson, but will keep it in mind next time I'm at the video store.

Yes, I'm quite surprised to see him listed as a GG nominee!

I wouldn't see this film again or buy the DVD. There just wasn't enough in it to keep me interested.
