There’s a host of supporting actors that should have any longstanding (or perhaps long sitting is more appropriate) cinema fans in heaven. Isn’t that Bruce Campbell, Steve Buscemi, and Bill Cobbs? Why, yes it is. It’s always fun to play “spot the actor” and The Hudsucker Proxy is a great an opportunity for it.
It’s hard to overlook the key supporting players to Robbins, made up of the legend Paul Newman and the ever brilliant Jennifer Jason Leigh. Newman is unsurprisingly great here, playing that asshole type of character who cares about nothing but money and power. And Leigh is perhaps the star of the film, delivering her lines like a machine-gun and captivating us with every single one of them. Take away all other aspects of the film and the cast on its own still holds up as a sight to behold.
Despite the Coens' success with wide audiences around the globe they still can’t be described as even remotely mainstream. They’re always interested in what they want to do, employing stories and characters they deem fit to, and could care less about what’s acceptable or “allowed” by the higher powers. It’s in that respect that they stand apart from almost every other filmmakers in the business today and The Hudsucker Proxy, although far from their best, is just another example of their unique mentality.
