I doubt that most of the people who go to see The Day the Earth Stood Still will even be aware of the fact it’s a remake. But for anyone who has seen the original there will no doubt be little things that will annoy them about it (not least of which is the exclusion of the famous phrase “Klaatu barada nikto”). But what irritates more than anything about the film is its reluctance to break out of the, frankly, boring mould of trying to wow with special effects and spectacle and aim for something a bit more thrilling and thought-provoking. It’s never a disaster but nor a worthwhile experience either and instead the word “meh” comes straight to mind.
