Carrie Bradshaw and her trio of gal pals are back for another New York adventure in Sex and the City: The Movie. Unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the HBO series, my bias against the series is not taken into account when reviewing this film. I am probably not the most knowledgeable person to review such a film. After leaving the theater and peeling off the inch of estrogen that had accumulated on my skin, a fair and honest review restricted to sentiment about the story and its characters was written. Being a male, some may suggest that my review of this film will automatically be negative, but this reviewer has overlooked the idea that males are so negatively portrayed in the film.
The story picks up four years after the series ended with the foursome continuing their lives of love and lust in New York City. The girls find themselves more mature than during the series by taking their lives and relationships more seriously. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is engaged to John Preston, aka Mr. Big (Charles Noth). Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) finds juggling work, her son, and her social life ever more difficult. Her sex life with her husband, Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) has become rocky. Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) has moved to Los Angeles with her boyfriend, Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis), but finds it difficult to make time for herself. Charlotte Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) describes a life so perfect that she becomes terrified something will eventually go wrong. The four go through some rough times during the film, but as all fairy tales go, they all live happily ever after.
The film feels like an extended, to-be-continued, five-part episode of the show and not a full-length motion picture. Writer and director Michael Patrick King has missed a grand opportunity to broaden the horizons of the show to a wider audience, especially males, with the film only appealing to the die-hard fans of the series. The die-hards will have a deeper appreciation for the film as it contains all the elements of the series.
