I agree, it was an excellent review of 'Serenity'. I think where he got people upset with him was his little side-bar on hating fat people on principal. Those of us who take acception to the notion of hating a person because they may be fat decided to give it back to him. I think he can take it. Seems like a big boy. Michelle

"Seems like a big boy." Indeed.

Honestly, though. Fat people should totally be sent to concentration camps.

That's like the crux of my argument.

(Also, that vampires are stupid and people who like them are stupid too.)

My saying that is totally not a self-depreciating statement designed to give humorous caveat to my dislike of Buffy. My opinion really is that fat people are innately deserving of hatred and social repulsion. 'Cause that's a valid point of discourse that's not innately self-mocking.

Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion, and if you believe the Firefly actors' performances were flat and bland, that's fine. But it is NOT the reason the show was cancelled. FOX aired the episodes in the wrong order. They thought the original pilot wasn't action packed enough and feared viewers would lose interest before things got going. If watched in the intended order, you're properly introduced to the characters and get to like them from the get go. Everyone I know that dislikes the show saw it on t.v. and refuse to give it a chance with the DVD set. That's just sad because it is a great show. The DVD set also includes episodes never aired. Anyway, I just saw the movie and loved it. Easily the best movie I've seen in years. Oh... and I stuck with Buffy for maybe 2 seasons before I lost interest. Angel got three episodes before I decided to move on.

My husband just put on the Andromeda series. The dialog is so trite and the acting is so flat compared to the performances of everyone on 'Firefly'. Timing and expressions are so real with the crew of Serenity. You can just tell they are living in the scene and experiencing it, rather than waiting for the next line to be delivered.

Bascially the only other decent sci fi show to come along in many years was Farscape. And they 'frilled' that show when they got rid of Zan. **sigh**

I too remember the day Firefly was cancelled. I hated Fox from that day on. Thank you Paramount! Hopefully the success of this movie will prove another harsh lesson learned to Fox. The first lesson was when Fox execs angered George Lucas enough, during the Star Wars trilogy, to pass Fox up for Paramount on another project he was working on, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I saw Serenity last night and loved it. It's only one of two SciFi shows that my wife will even watch, much less love. Firefly was the first and Battlestar Galactica is the second. Everything else she HATES!!! Now that's an endorsement. We'll be seeing Serenity again in the theater and the DVD will be on our shelf.

The only disappointment I had with Serenity was that I was looking forward to a big theater wide sing-along on the theme song. I'm thinking I wasn't the only one who knew it.

Oh absolutely! We love the theme song. I tried Battlestar Galatica, its just so dark and depressing. Humans need humor, even at(or especially during) their darkest moments. That is another of the many things I love about Firefly, the humor and the timing. Michelle

In a word, Serenity is another Made-for-TV piece of crap that should have been left on FOX TV so all the scifi geeks who live in their parents cellar can have something to wack off to again.

There's plenty of humor on battlestar galatica, so I have no idea what you are talking about. It's just not Zany humor for the fanboys! Too bad your missing out! Whovian222 at msn.com

    Well,
Serenity had way to many holes in the movie. Especially for those viewing it as a movie and not the finish of a T.V. show. Watch it again if you do not realize it!!! It was like they tried so hard to give it an eding because they got this so-called "miraculous" chance to finish it, that it was like opening the last two chapters of a book and saying who is that guy and why is he there. What?? Who is this highly respected prostitute without a cause flying around on the ship and why does she dissapear and then show back up with some new crazy outfit. I know a lot of "Firefly Fans" or "Browncoats." Funny, they agree. They enjoyed it for themselves, but think it had entirely to many details from the series missing. A sequal at this point would be comical and it would flop. They killed everyone that onviewers who are not supporting the crazy come back, liked!!
It did not live up to it standard. The acting was dissapointing. And why wasn't the movie just called Rivers? That is all Serenity was about!! Quite annoying.

So because the movie didn't show the courtesan changing clothes, that's a plot hole? Methinks you don't quite get the idea of what a "plot hole" is.

They gave several reasons for her joining the ship, by the way. The most obvious of these was that she likes the captain. The fact that she feared that the empire might come after her again apparently didn't make much of an impression either.

The trailer was fantastic. The movie falls flat on its face. Seems like the ghouls of 'Event Horizon' meet the crew of 'Titan A.E.'. There is no focus, no point to the story. The actors are all lightweight, with little screen presence. The pace constantly gets slower, and you'll be yawning at the end. The only part of the story that seemed intriguing was 'Rivers', but then the story was not about her. What was it about anyway?

yep i agree, i had not seen the series here in the uk, but really wanted to enjoy this movie! better than starwars the reviews said! well.... My wife and I were yawning 20 mins in. Toooooo much forced talk, on and on and on like just to fill time! boring battle at the end That assassin samurai guy, looked like he was out of place all the time! had no real command over his troops and no evilness! all pretty weak in fact .We were well dissapointed. film put on ebay an hour later. sorry!

So, I'm way late on this blog. But...just saw Serenity for the first time tonight. Actually, Just saw Firefly for the first time starting last week on DVD. Anyway, Serenity was quite a movie. A few friends have been bugging me to see it & it's TV season. Well worth a look. Only thing I really didn't care for is that Shepard seemed to only have a cameo in respect to the rest of the cast.
