Reading into this subtext is diverting, and there are some genuinely funny moments in the film. There's also a breathtakingly impressive CGI moment when the floodwaters explode into the valley. But like the first Ice Age, The Meltdown's slow pace is punctuated too infrequently by laughter or surprise. I mean to say, it's a bit boring. The kids seem to like it, though.
Given the box office success of both Ice Age films and Fox's difficulties in establishing another CGI franchise (see the relative failure of last year's Robots), it seems certain that a sequel is in the works. In his review of the film Michael Wilmington, of the Chicago Tribune, raises an excellent point: having started and ended an Ice Age in four years, where do the creators of the franchise go next? I wonder if they aren't contemplating making a feature-length film from Scat's travails with that acorn. I don't know how they'd do it, but hats off to them if they want to try.
