This isn't a horror movie in the classic sense. It's movie about the horror induced by combination of drugs along with an underlying mental health condition. But not just that, the "bug" is not a bug in the classic sense as in insect, but more like an infection. Also, the fact that the woman could buy into the man's delusion so fully was not simply because of the drugs but also the fact that she was so lonely and desperate and depressed; all that left her prone to being lured into the delusion.

This movie was about two meth addicts.

if you have ever experienced the true paranoid psychosis of a heavily addicted crack/crystal meth addict who hasn't slept in weeks you'd understand the beauty of this message. Such drugs can turn a smart "normal" person into the most paranoid crazy person-that you thought were just the made up subject of movies. I unfortunately experienced this when I dated someone who developed such an addiction. It got to the point that I was accused of hiding someone under our bed who was tying to stab him through the bed, and on the otherside of the wall(our neighbors apartment) it was when I would fall asleep that I'd be accused of talking to "them" and barraged with questions of what I was doing when I'd use the bathroom, he too at times would think he had a bug bite him-always unfounded, he would also scratch at his arms and pluck his arm hair out. When you have seen someone who you had known for 10 years develop an addiction that leads to such awesomely delusional thinking that is truly crazy then can you truly appreciate this film. To the average person who has never experienced such a crazy scenario this movie would seem so out there and impossibly unbelievable but if you can watch the movie with an understanding that this can actually become a reality to such drug addicted people you have a different appreciation for it. We got through the craziness and his addiction. That was years ago now, I dont know how we got through it but we did(I was a little crazy to stick through it, luckily it didn't last long when it got to this stage and he very soon got sober). When he reflects back on it he knows it was absolutely crazy yet he says at the time,in his mind, he truly believed everything to be perfect reality. The drugs made his perceptions of everything so skewed from my breathing, to lights and shadows. He'd lock us in the room like a fortress, and constantly look out our apartment windows! He didn't think it was crazy at the time. That's why such drugs are so dangerous, and why this movie is so important. watch it again and place youself into the guys character as if he really believes all of his paranoid delusions. Imagine they were really true to you-that would be petrifying, the only thing more petrifying is the fact that people do believe their delusions, they see and hear the things they are imagining with such truth(in their head)the same way you see my words written here, The only scarier thing is that I too could have ended up like the doctor, or perhaps other innocent person could be killed because of someones crazy misconception of reality-whether drug induced or not. Im sure it has happened and imagine when that person finally sobers up in jail-what a horrible tragedy all around. This is a whole other consequence of drugs rarely explored yet very common and truly real.
