Movie Review: Because I Said So

Because I Said So is a comedy that explores parenting when it is finally time to cut the apron strings. Dapne Wilder (Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give, The Family Stone) is a mother whose love knows no bounds or boundaries.

As a single parent, Daphne has raised three daughters - the youngest and a slightly awkward and adorable Milly (Mandy Moore, A Walk To Remember, Saved!), the steadfast psychologist Maggie (Lauren Graham, Gilmore Girls) and the wild and sexy Mae (Piper Perabo, The Prestige, Coyote Ugly).

In order to prevent Milly from making the same romantic mistakes she did, Daphne decides to set her up with the perfect man. Daphne decides not to tell Milly that she placed an ad in the online personals to find him. The main thing linking these two women is that they are partners in a baking goods company. It seems comic mayhem unfolds as the well-intended mother continues to do the wrong thing for the right reasons - all in the name of love for her daughter.

Is the man for Milly the responsible architect Jason (Tom Everett Scott), or is it the single parent, free-spirited musician Johnny (Gabriel Macht)? Daphne will push and suggest her way into Milly's decisions until the truth is known of the online ad.

This film is quite funny and smart because it does not focus mainly on Milly. It develops into a hilarious battle of wills when Daphne finds her own love interest in Johnny's father Joe (Stephen Collins, 7th Heaven).

This movie showcases both Keaton's comedy timing and her dramatic flair. Mandy Moore continues to challenge herself and grow with this project. The music score is fantastic with R&B soundtracks of "Mama Said" and "I Met Him on Sunday" by the Shirelles, and "That's Alright Mama" by Rick Nelson. The film will have a wide appeal for women, but it's great entertainment for the guys, too.

I am so not watching a movie about an overbearing mother who refuses to cut the apron strings. I get enough of that in real life! :P
