Air Buddies continues a successful franchise with a new addition that comes five strong. Air Bud was the hero of several sports-related movies that created a strong, stable audience of young viewers who loved watching a dog play little league sports.
The next generation comes along with five puppies. Budderball is the football-playing heavyweight whose immediate concern is always his next meal. B-Dawg plays basketball, isn’t exactly a team player, and speaks of himself in the third person. Bud-dha follows Eastern philosophy and loves baseball. Mudbud loves playing in the dirt and is a mutt who enjoys simple pleasures, including volleyball. Rosebud is the only girl, loves soccer, and is into pretty and proper.
The story is narrated by Deputy Sniffer, the local lawdog, and was voiced by Don Knotts in one of his final roles. Patrick Cranshaw, another actor with a long line of credits, played cantankerous Sheriff Bob. Both actors passed away shortly after the movie was finished.
Five puppies around the house, all of them active and rambunctious, turns out to be too much for the family.
That’s made particularly clear when the nanny the family hires to look after the puppies gets tied in her chair while the family is at a basketball game. The decision is made, though sadly, to find new homes for the puppies.
The scenes of the talks the parents have with their son are well done, and the scenes between Air Bud and Molly (the puppies’ parents) are awesome, especially showing how they get from house to house during visits.
In the next few scenes, the movie’s villains are introduced. A rich father contracts a wild game hunter to bring his son Air Bud.
When the puppies find out they’re going to be given away, they’re not happy. Several interviews with prospective families for the puppies later, the final decisions are finally made. It’s obvious that these are great choices for each of the puppies, but the puppies find reasons not to be happy.
