Movie Review: 28 Days Later (2003)

We've all seen cookie-cutter monster flicks aplenty--you know, hordes of the undead shambling predictably towards their victims, that sort of thing. 28 Days Later breaks free from that mold - imagine a zombie movie that scares more with silence than with gore.

With endless love, we left you sleeping. Now we're sleeping with you. Don't wake up.

As the film begins, we discover that good intentions literally pave the road to hell when a group of misguided animal rights activists free chimps infected with a strange virus. After 28 days, an everyman bicycle courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a hospital, completely alone. As he wanders the eerily abandoned streets of London shouting "hello," you can't help but be affected by a sense of quiet dread.

Eventually, he discovers two survivors who fill him in: once infected by the virus (which is transferred through blood), ordinary people become mindless killers consumed completely by rage. There's only 20 seconds to kill someone before the transformation is complete, meaning that you have to be prepared to turn on your friends at a moment's notice. I won't spoil what plot there is, other than to intimate that the promised "safe zone" is anything but.

28 Days Later is more an exploration of the innate human tendency towards violence than a horror film, if you ask me. Though the exposition ultimately outstrips the conclusion, there's a reason this became a cult classic.

It's a great film. I wonder if they will be doing a sequel.

This was a great movie, but it is not, technically, a zombie movie. Even though that is the closest comparison.

Sadly this movie has grown less enjoyable after multiple viewings. But it was still a good thrill ride the first couple of times around.

Technically it isn't a zombie movie, but it might as well be. The people act just like zombies.
