To boot, Brick is equipped with its own vernacular of high school street slang. (i.e. Take a powder – to slip away; e.g., “Why’d you take a powder the other night.” or Yeg – a guy; e.g., “They’d probably find some yeg to pin it on.”) And as I mentioned above “pin,” is also used in the film as a noun, slang for drug runner.
With all this emphasis on morphology and cultural lexicon, you can see why this film just might be a critic's dream. Brick has already received early acclaim, snagging a Special Jury Award at Sundance last year for “Originality of Vision.” At its premiere at the Austin Film Festival, it was met with similar enthusiasm.
As background, writer/director Rian Johnson (May) wrote the script seven years ago and like many rising filmmakers spent a great deal of time trying to finance the film. He’s spent the last year of which shopping it around at various festivals. With a national release date set for March 24, 2006, the final product warrants some attention. In other words, go see it.
