For those who just want to know, "Should I see this or not?" without all the fluff and intellectualism (or at least minimal amounts), I present to you these bite-sized movie reviews. If you're in an abnormally large hurry, skip to the last few words of each section, as each is noted with "See it" or "Pass." So without further ado, let's see what's on the slate in this superhuman edition.
Hancock
Better than expected. Still nothing spectacular, but the twist actually wasn't spoiled by the trailers for once, a twist that really changes the whole texture of the movie about halfway through. I thought it was just going to be about a down-and-out superhero going into rehab, which it is, but then it got a bit more involved and interesting. It actually goes to the trouble to establish an alternate universe where Hancock and those like him have been around for thousands of years, what their respective kryptonite is, and how they evolve. Not for those seeking deep examination of life and society, but the performances were entertaining, and for popcorn fodder, it didn't let me down.
Wanted
Stylistically, this was really engaging. I heard going in that the design team wanted to get viewers to say, "I've never seen that before," and they accomplished it. The story twists in a somewhat foreseeable way, and there are elements that wear on the nerves, but as a cheap night of high-octane thrills, you could do worse. Recommended for action fans.
Daredevil
More of a drama with lousy dialogue than an action flick. The CGI and fight sequences are straight out of 1998, being as obvious as they are dull. If you've seen anything made in the last five years, this will look like amateurish dumb-fu. Apparently the director's cut makes things much better in terms of the story, but the dialogue, plot, characters, and performances were all sophomoric. Pass.
