Movie Media Special Edition: Friday the 13th Film Series

Part of: Movie Media

There have been countless slasher flicks over the years, with the 1980s being the genre's peak decade. These years saw the rise of three killers who sit at the pinnacle of their genre: Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees. There are others, of course, but this trio are the biggest of them all, collecting a body count that would make Rambo envious. If you are looking for inventive uses for bladed items, watch these films. If you enjoy the slaughter of teenagers, watch these films. If you haven't seen these films, watch these films.

This week I have collected the trailers for the classic Friday the 13th series. It is interesting to see the evolution over the series of ten films.

Friday the 13th

In 1980 the evolution of the slasher genre continued with the introduction of one of the most enduring franchises in genre history. Friday the 13th brought us the story of Jason Voorhees, who met an untimely fate at the hands of careless counselors. This film did for summer camps what Jaws did for the beach. The trailer plays up the body count to the tune of the title. I am not sure what the title has to do with the actual film, but it is catchy. You can also see Kevin Bacon in an early film role.

Friday the 13th: Part II

One year after Friday the 13th helped kick off the slasher movement of the 1980s we get the first sequel. It is not my favorite of the series, but it does do something different from other franchises. In the sequel, the killer is not the same as in the first movie. I am sorry if I am spoiling this for you, but Jason Voorhees was not the killer in the original film. On top of that, he may be the killer here, but he does not wear a hockey mask, which is funny, considering Jason and the hockey mask are the most iconic ingredients in a Friday the 13th film. The trailer continues the trend of counting the kills from the first, but does not shy away from showing glimpses of Jason. I assume this was to show how the film could exist given the original ending.
