The Internet age finally has its cult B-movie classic.
Snakes on a Plane, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Julianna Margulies (and that's about it), has been one of the most talked about movies of the summer. This buzz comes amidst Pirates, Superman and other tremendous names on film this quarter.
The movie, being called SoaP by its "insiders," actually does have a plot. A ruthless assassin tries to kill an important witness by unleashing poisonous snakes on a trans-oceanic flight.
SoaP was not screened for critics and it opens today for the public with most reviewers and media outlets saying the same thing:
It's going to suck.
And it probably is going to suck, but it is going to be a hugely profitable one star, 105 minute sucker.
The premise could not be simpler.
Snakes.
On a plane.
With Samuel L. Jackson.
The result is a one-and-a-half hour action fright fest with some comedy and sex thrown in just to ensure the R rating, and quite possibly the number one slot at the box office this weekend.
Cult following may be an understatement at this point. Snake "mania" is out of control. Everyone wants to hear Samuel L. Jackson scream that he's "sick of these motherf-king snakes."
Fansites have also sprung up world-wide. According to The Boston Metro's Dorothy Robinson, more than 48 songs and 95 spoof videos have been produced about the movie. A blog, aptly called Snakes on a Blog has also gained popularity in recent weeks.
It is predicted that this hype will not last long. Robinson actually went as far as to predict that the creepy, crawly fetish will be worn out by Monday.
Time well tell on this movie, but if history is any lesson, sucking is no sure measure of success.
