Do you keep in touch with any of the seaQuest cast?
[Executive Producer] David J. Burke’s mother loves me. I met her during a piece of theater I did in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, at The Blowing Rock Stage Company. My dear friend Ken Kay has really built this miracle of a theater in a little town at the top of this charming area in Carolina. I love to go there and frequent his theater and play like we actors love to play, and one night, lo and behold, this woman approached me at a gala event and informed me that she was David’s mother. She went on to say the most beautiful things regarding my performance — like, did David have any idea what I was capable of doing, and did Hollywood? It was very sweet of her. I bump into Edward Kerr (Lt. Brody) from time to time. I’m close with the DeLuise family, Michael (Lt. Piccolo) and Peter (Dagwood), and I recently ran into Marco Sanchez (Lt. Ortiz). Occasionally, I see some of the writers here and there.
What are you watching on TV when you’re not creating it?
I have an insatiable appreciation for international politics, so I turn on the news and flip through different news programs. I like to be objective, so I’ll see how a particular network is slanting a story. It's always interesting and depressing to me at the same time, because I’m a fan of getting the news straight. I like to get the information, not be fed what a corporation wants us to get out of the story. I love college football. I love it even more when Florida State is at the top of their game. I love sports and news.
If you really were the President, what’s the first thing you would do?
I would tackle health care in America. That’s the first thing that comes up. I have a brother who’s a cardiologist, and another brother who’s a chiropractor, and a sister who’s a police lieutenant. If we didn’t have this combination of children in our family, I don’t want to imagine what would be happening to my parents right now. If what’s happening to them is happening to other people who don’t have a cardiologist in their family, I feel very badly for each and every one of them. It’s criminal that an older person on a fixed budget is forced to shell out $200 for a bottle of medicine. We need to take care of our older and sick people.
