Internet video creators who can’t pay the bills with the kudos and comments they receive on sites like YouTube have a new alternative thanks to Lulu.tv.
Like Revver, the site plans to start paying contributors for their efforts – especially those contributors who generate a lot of traffic.
According to the International Herald Tribune, to get the ball rolling, Lulu, which lets anyone upload and watch videos, will charge $14.95 a month for pro accounts. Those who get accounts have a chance to share in the cut. Lulu officials have said 80 percent of the subscription money will go into an account to be dished out to video creators. Those who draw the most traffic will get the biggest cut.
The company intends to begin the effort by putting $5,000 up.
All in all, this sounds like a really neat idea. While it's not likely most video makers would make their investment back, those who do could see a tidy chunk of change depending on traffic levels.
The site itself is loaded with videos in lots of categories ranging from ads to weird with a whole lot of humor somewhere in the middle. Some of the videos look pretty darn good and there are lots of clever ones, too. It's more than worth a browse or ten, especially if you're tired of network offerings.
