There are plenty of movies that are lesser-known gems. If you'd rather watch something other than endless "Law & Order" reruns, try out some of these flicks:
Buckeroo Banzai - We own that one. I love the saying "No matter where you go, there you are."
Tatie Danielle - This movie is a riot. If it was ever remade in America, we'd need to resurrect Walter Matthau from the dead and have him play the lead. Of course, in his case, Tatie Danielle would have to be changed to Oncle Daniel.
Cold Comfort Farm - "There's something nasty in the woodshed!"
The Dish - A real gem starring Sam Neil.
Gosford Park - I'll watch anything Helen Mirren is in.
The Devil's Backbone - I'm always recommending this one. It's Spanish, and set during the Spanish civil war. A very unusual ghost story.
Dead Birds - Another horror film, set during the Civil War. Very creepy and unusual.
Dead End - You'll probably figure out the gimmick within the first ten minutes, but it's so much fun watching this family bicker and gripe on their way to a Christmas dinner that you just won't be able to turn it off. This is a very funny and spooky horror movie.
The Changeling - It stars George C. Scott, and it won a bunch of awards. Another very unusual ghost story. All my readers know how much I love a good ghost story.
Wages of Fear - A teeth-ghasher about a group of mercenaries transporting nitroglycerin from Point A to Point B, hoping all the while that the cache doesn't explode. A knuckle-biter if there ever was one.
Under The Tuscan Sun - The perfect movie to watch if you're a recently divorced woman. This is a feel-good movie. You'll want to move to Italy after seeing this one.
Jackie Brown - A Tarantino film that doesn't have blood and guts spewing all over the place. That's why it didn't do well. Pam Grier looks great, and her acting is top-notch.
Quills - The story of the Marquis de Sade, starring Geoffrey Rush and Kate Winslet.
Mystery, Alaska - This movie has one of my favorite movie lines. Michael McKean says it: "He shot me!! What the fuck kind of bum-fuck shit-hole town is this?"
Calendar Girls - Another gem starring Helen Mirren. I love Helen Mirren.

One of the funniest films I've ever seen:
"You're a Big Boy Now" (1966)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola before you know what. Really funny stuff.
In the drama category:
"Kiss the Blood off My Hands" (1948)
Really dark film set in London. Stars Burt Lancaster. Strange, dark, and not too well known.
In the no category category:
"Blowup" (1966)
David Hemmings is a photogapher who thinks he saw a murder. Or did he? Cool, hip, swinging London of the 60s and a young Vanessa Redgrave goes topless.

Oooh, "Blow Up" was bizarre. I liked that movie a lot. "Blow Out" (I think by John Carpenter) was good as a remake, but not as good as the original.
Yup, "The Devil's Backbone" rocks. If you're in the mood for a good horror/ghost story, you must see it. Very spooky and unusual.
I saw "Bagdad Cafe" years ago but I don't remember much of it. I loved the theme song. I managed to find it, and I still listen to it sometimes when I want some quiet music.
Another good comedy is "Happy, Texas". I laughed my ass off.

"Hearts of the West," one of Jeff Bridges' first in the early-70s.

Wages of Fear sounds like the plot for the movie The Sourcerer with Roy Schieder. It was a remake of an earlier film with the same name. I believe it didnt do well at the box office as it came out shortly after The Exorcist and perhaps people thought it was the same genre. The movie was terrific and i would highly reccomend it.
