King Kong DVD Sales Score Record High for Universal

The DVD sales of King Kong earned a king-sized $100 million, making it the largest first six-day sell-through of a DVD in Universal Studios’ history. The DVD earnings also mean King Kong is steadily continuing its record-breaking success as Universal Pictures’ fourth-highest grossing film of all time.

This all means that selling more than 6.5 million DVDs in its first week, King Kong is ensuring a place in the record books of Universal’s 94-year history. Having made roughly $550 million in ticket sales worldwide, King Kong is following in the steps of such greats as Jurassic Park, E.T., and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Did winning three Oscars influence the sales? Who knows, but King Kong isn’t showing any signs of slowing down with the release of the original theatrical version and a Special Collectors Edition two-disc set on DVD. Both DVDs boast collectible packaging with artwork created by WETA Digital Ltd., the company behind the Oscar-winning visual effects.

So what can make a great movie with great DVD artwork even better? Amazing cross-promotional opportunities, of course. With partners ranging from Papa John’s Pizza, Glad, Hostess, Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Microwave Popcorn, Kellogg’s, Nestle, Toshiba, Chase, and Kodak EasyShare, King Kong has made a giant of a promotional effort.

If you haven’t yet done so, you might want to consider purchasing this DVD. The single disc is priced at $29.98 with the two-disc Special Edition costing a mere $30.98. King Kong is the age old tale of a beauty and a beast by Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings. It stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody, Colin Hanks, and Andy Serkis. And of course, the giant, loveable King Kong.
