The web is abuzz with the news that Alias, Lost and M:I:3 mastermind will co-write, produce, and direct a new Star Trek feature film.
This feature will be a prequel to the original series, where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy meet up during their formative years at Starfleet Academy. If the script is anything like a treatment Ain't It Cool got hold of, it's gonna be bloody fantastic. It's a LONG, LONG read but well worth it for Trek fans.
If Abrams can sprinkle his magic on the franchise, we might get some good Trek after years of blunders. Maybe the franchise can rise from the ashes of the craptastic Nemesis and uber-boring Enterprise series. I didn't think it was possible, but with Abrams on board I think it's possible.

I have never been able to sit through an episode of Alias or Lost, yet I never get tired of watching original series Star Trek reruns (or the first six movies...yes, including Trek V:Final Frontier.)
I'm thinking Star Trek XI could be as disastrous as Star Wars "Episode I". Might as well let Shatner write and direct it, I say... (again)...

The Final Frontier was a great idea, but it was low on the budget and somewhat badly executed. But it wasn't as bad as Nemesis.

I agree, Jeliel -- Trek V:FF is actually pretty cool until the ridiculous (yet hilarious) ending... it's also great fun to watch while listening to Shatner's commentary on the DVD. I guess I'd have edited out the embarrassing... um... performance by Uhura as well. But there's a decent Trek movie in there somewhere, I'm certain of it...

Oh First Contact was a gem, still is. Borg Queen is in my top 5 vilains of all time. I thought The Voyage home made more dinero than The Motion picture.

I agree with your comment #9, Jeliel. Re. box office, you are correct for US Gross but my figures were Worldwide, MP beat VH by about 6 million, pretty close.

As a closet Trekker (from back when we used to be called Trekkies)I have to admit that I have been seriously underwhelmed regarding Star Trek for at least the past 7 years or more.
Actually I don't think I have felt good about it since they killed off Captain Kirk.
I appreciated TNG but for me it was TOS all the way. Beyond TNG - there was nothing for me - just an abyss - a black hole of Trek nothingness.
But I have a bad feeling about this (to quote a famous line from another "Star" oriented franchise.).
The treatment actually doesn't sound bad but oh dear heaven above - who will play these roles and how dreadful will they be?
