Interview With Jay McCarroll, Subject of New Documentary Eleven Minutes - Page 2

Have I ever regretted saying anything? I say the worst things. I speak my mind and I have opinions and might rub a lot of people wrong. I am not an ass-kisser and I’m not going to play that role so if I feel bitter or elated or excited or if I have an opinion about something then I’m going to voice it.

But I was wondering if you ever, like the next minute or the next day, thought, “Whoops, that was too much.”

I did call [PR host] Heidi Klum a twat once in an interview which blew up in my face.

Yeah, I did read about that.

And I don’t really care. I don’t owe her anything. She doesn’t pay my rent. I don’t particularly think she is [a twat]. I think in that particular case that I was referring to she was being a twat, definitely [Note: This is in reference to a Time Out New York interview where McCarroll called Klum a twat for nagging him about not being active enough after winning the show]. I don’t really care, that was a thousand years ago. It seems like a whole lifetime ago that these things happened. Now I’m a much more normal, grounded person.

Yeah, doesn’t your season of Project Runway seem like so long ago?

Oh yeah. Well, you know, hopefully I’ve evolved since then. I like to revisit it, you know? It was a really amazing experience, no doubt, but the aftermath has been really strange to watch as far as my own career and personality have evolved.

Do you still watch it?

Oh, yeah, most definitely. I was just at the finale show at Bryant Park [in September].

How was that?

It was fun! It’s always good to catch up with people from the show. There’s 60 or 70 of us now that share in that weird social experiment of fashion designers as reality television. It’s interesting to swap stories and see how different people are digesting the experience. Most of them are fucking idiots. [Laughs.] No, there are some good char... some good people that have come out of that show, most definitely.

What did you think of the finalists’ collections?

Um, I thought they were kind of… um… how do I say this? I don’t know. I guess they were kind of… I don’t know. Weak, maybe? You know, they didn’t have a lot of time. I had six months to put a collection together. They had two. So…

Really? Wow.

Yeah, they just finished filming July 15th and they showed September 15th, so that’s only two months. They really worked their asses off and with that comes probably artistic compromise. But I was really impressed with Korto’s and Leanne’s [collections]. I thought they were pretty good. I couldn’t make a collection in two months, that’s for sure. That’s not a lot of time.
