"In My Skin"

Title of Marina de Van's new movie, a psychodrama about a young Parisian professional who becomes morbidly fascinated with her body to the point of exploring it with a knife. Says de Van, in a New York Times story [scroll down about 2/3 of the way]:

"'All the themes that interest me touch on the universe of the fantastic. But for me, as soon as the supernatural element enters the picture, fear disappears and I'm no longer interested. As a director, I like the moment when the real is almost fantastic, but never is completely fantastic. I like that frontier."

"Possible or not - that's all the same to me. I wrote what I wanted, and I knew that afterward I would find a way to do it. The important thing is the idea."

De Van played the lead in Francois Ozon's films "See the Sea" and "Sitcom," and she helped write the screenplays for his "Under the Sand" and "Eight Women," both superb.

In an interview last year, de Van said, "It is through my body that I am in the world, that I am connected with others. If I am no longer my body, what am I? Where does this desire come from to want to see what the body is and if I am 'inside?'"

About "In My Skin," a Los Angeles Times critic wrote, "Spectacularly grotesque and literally nauseating, even for this usually intrepid moviegoer, 'In My Skin' is among the more disturbing films in this blood-drenched cinematic season."

I can't go, much as I'd like to: I hide behind my hands in scary movies, and get nightmares just from the sound. It would probably be best to not even think about seeing this if you have ANY issues involving cutting and/or self-mutilation.
