Well, it's official.
Rumors have been circulating on the web for weeks.
But at Comic Con in San Diego on Thursday, Paramount officially announced that Zachary Quinto, who currently plays Sylar on NBC's Heroes, will be playing the younger version of the famous Vulcan Spock, in the upcoming Star Trek XI. The film is set for a December 2008 release and is being directed by JJ Abrams, of Alias and Lost fame. The last film that Abrams directed was Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 3. Abrams is also producing the film, along with his partner-in-crime, Damon Lindelof. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers) wrote the script.
At the Comic Con panel, Abrams introduced Quinto to the cheering crowd, and followed up by introducing Leonard Nimoy, who was announced to be reprising the role of Spock that he made so famous.
According to Variety, when asked what he thought of Quinto's casting, Nimoy said, "It was logical." Hee.

As a fan of Heroes and a self-proclaimed mini-Trekkie, I could not be more thrilled by this news. I was already psyched for this movie after hearing that my man JJ was directing, but now friggin' Sylar is in it? AHHHH! Too much for a fangirl to handle.
Not only does Quinto possess more than a passing resemblence to a young Nimoy, but his previous work has proven he's got some pretty decent acting chops, as well. Just watching Heroes, it's hard to get past the creeeeepy, but if you check out some of his work as the flamboyant Sassan on So NoTORIous, you'll really appreciate his acting range.
