I have seen all of the Harry Potter movies and not for one second i thought that it would have to come to being pg 13. I meen it is no longer appropriate for kids under 13. I meen whats this going to come to is the 7th movie going to be really rated R?

If the seventh film had really bad stuff in it, it could end up with a rating of NC-17. It's extremely unlikely this would ever happen, though.

NC-17 is the kiss of death for a major movie. Most theater chains refuse to show anything with that rating, making it virtually impossible for a big budget picture to turn a profit at the box office.

As a result, studios normally cut out anything and everything they have to, just to get the rating dialed back to an R. Many will also cut material to avoid the R rating, because generally PG-13 is thought to be the most profitable rating for a mainstream movie.

the god thing about the film rating in th uk is film makers can get away with much more, so this filw will most likly keep its pg rating. Film 5 go up to a 12A and 6 & 7 will most likly stay the same or posably a 15 Cert for 7. It is very rare a horror gose over that. Well thay are crap anyway!

Maaan, Victor, it'd be something to see an arthouse theater showing an NC-17 Harry Potter, though, wouldn't it?

Seriously, I'm going to be really irritated if parents start complaining about the level of violence or even the PG-13 rating itself. The book has been out for five years already; any parent has had plenty of time to read the book and analyze whether it, or a movie of it, is appropriate for kids. And to me it's not a stretch to read it and imagine that a movie would be PG-13. Even if they don't show any gore or anything, this one is much darker than the preceding three. To downplay the darkness of it would be to ruin the story and possibly the series.

So whining parents, I pre-emptively ask you to shut up.

Could be very interesting, if tastefully done, of course.

The trouble with NC-17 is, filmmakers tend to lose their minds after they decide to take that risk. Far too many will just completely drop all standards of decency. Then they go on to ignore all the other standards as well, like storytelling, respect for the characters, respect for the author, and respect for the viewer.

NC-17 didn't get banned from mainstream theater chains just because they're timid and they care more about profit than about art. (Although they certainly are, and they certainly do.) NC-17 has richly earned its reputation as the sign of a trashy movie. This isn't always the case, but it is often enough.

Funny thing is, almost all of the NC-17 movies I've seen or even heard about have at least aspired to "artistic." Movies that don't aspire to it seem to go straight into the XXX category. But you're right; intentional or no, NC-17's tend to be sleaze.

"Showgirls"...need I say more? It was a movie proud to wear the NC-17 banner (the first to be rated that, I believe?), it embraced it...and it was a horrible, horrible movie and an absolute box office flop.

Victor is right - NC-17=trashy movie

I really want harry potter to be PG13. It has to be what will be the point if its not. THe other books should be rated R but the goblet of fire has to be Pg13 I read the book. I think that this is good that its PG13 because even if your not old enough still everybody is going to still see it.

I think that Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire should be at leat PG13 because the book is so scary and I like scary books. But the best part of this is that its a movie. People have waited for this day so that it will become a motion picture. People read the books and thought that that it was the best book ever so please dont take away the pleasure from the fans. It will be okay

I think the PG-13 rating is very appropriate for "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire." But I am also glad to see that the studios and critics (at least in the US) have been very good about noting that the film might be too intense for younger viewers. I even noted that a Spanish language TV show emphasized the movie's PG-13 rating during their movie review segment.

And although some parents might foolishly take their younger kids to the film under the false impression that any movie featuring children must be OK for all kids, I think that most parents take a common sense view that if a child is too young to read the novels, he or she is probably too young to see the movie.

By the way, I think that having the later films rated R would be hilarious, but obviously will never happen.

As an aside, in the past an NC-17 rating was often the kiss of death because not only would some theater chains refuse to book the film, many major newspapers would refuse to advertise the film even though their critics would not be barred from reviewing it, and major video chains like Blockbuster would not stock the video release. Ironically, some mature themed films that are unrated have a better chance of getting distributed than one that is rated NC-17.
