Five Favorite Film & TV DVDs Of 2005...

  • The Complete Thin Man Collection -- All of the movies and a pair of documentaries nicely boxed up at a reasonable price. Not all of them are necessarily classics, but a good time is guaranteed (and you gotta love Asta...) Cocktails, anyone?

  • Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941 — hours upon hours to explore: from pioneering "artistic" experimental film-making to home movies of the early 20th century to Busby Berkeley song and dance extravaganzas to guys just goofing around with their "new" movie cameras... an astonishing collection and obviously a labor of love. Sure, some of the newly added synthesizer music on the silent films is pretty cheesy... but hey, just turn off the volume if you don't like it (or come up with your own soundtrack...)
  • Orson Welles: F for Fake — A wonderful surprise... I never even knew this existed until I saw the DVD in the New Release rack... One-of-a-kind pseudo-documentary-essay about forgery, fakery, and deception in general written, directed by, and starring Orson in all his mid-1970s excess... overall, a whirlwind ride with fast and furious editing and a truly unique eccentric charm to it. And as always with the Criterion Collection, there are plenty of fascinating extras (most notably an interesting documentary about Orson's many unfinished projects that includes a segment with the Muppets that must be seen to be believed...)
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Fourth Season — Maybe not quite as good as the first three seasons... and HBO really needs to include some bonus goodies on these DVDs... but still the funniest TV show out there and some of the only comedy episodes I can watch repeatedly and still enjoy every time...
  • The Twilight Zone: Season 3 (The Definitive Edition)The third installment in this overpriced but "definitive" edition of TZ episodes finally issued complete, uncut, and with bonus features galore... includes the classic tales "A Game of Pool," "To Serve Man," and the incredibly terrifying "It's A Good Life."
