Firepussy at Sundance

"Firepussy" is a short film which is screening this week as an official entry at the Sundance Film Festival. Laurel Almerinda is the writer, director, DP and editor of this non-linear film about a pyromaniac poet. A highly visual mixture of film, digital video and animation, "Firepussy" is technically and artistically very accomplished. A free form blend of imagery and sound, "Firepussy" is about Maria, a poet who plays with fire. She travels to the Yucatan to get some sort of connection to her past.

Parts of this reminded me of the work of the Hernandez brothers in "Love And Rockets" and while people think of the Mayans as vanished, the Mayans still exist and live in Mexico, Central America and the United States.

"Firepussy" is a promising debut from a young film maker.
