Fat Pizza - They're big, and they're cheesey

Ahahahahahahahah!

Definitive proof that Aussies are more than capable of doing damn fine comedy. I've seen the film, and afterwards discovered that it's also a Tv series over there. They really should think about "exporting" it, because whilst many of the jokes (and the stereotypes that are poked fun at) are specific to Australia, they are recognisable and indeed still funny and relevant elsewhere.

I'm English, have lived in England all my life, but i can identify with almost all of the stereotypes that pop up in this film (and the jokes linked with them). Undoubtedly, Fat Pizza (they're big, and they're cheesey) won't appeal to everyone - there's an abundance of jokes about drugs, toilet humour and sex-crazed blokes in their early twenties.

But to someone like me, a (not quite sex-crazed) 20-year-old bloke, and typical in a number of ways, this film is genius. It manages to rise above the likes of American pie (except possibly the first of those films) by having more relevant gags mixed in with some pythonesque random strangeness.

The topics that are made fun of are, in my opinion, more general than the more relevant-to-the-US-only jokes of the likes of American Pie (no badness on the Pie series for that, after all it was made in the US. My point is just that the Aussies in Fat Pizza have made a wider-appealing comedy)

The storyline is a good mixture of inspired-by-the-real-world and complete nonsense. We have the guys working for Fat Pizza, one of whom was mistaken for an illegal immigrant before, but managed to escape the detention camp by getting everyone to riot, then fooled the escapees to split into two directions, while he went a third.

Fat Pizza itself is ran by a disgusting, violent bloke, who is so sex-starved that he's ordered a mail order bride, but he's so stingy that she's arriving on a tiny boat full of illegal immigrants (oh yeah, and he lives with his mother because he IS Italian). One of the pizza delivery bloke's mates shags lots of women, whilst he hides and tapes the whole thing, and the videos are put on the 'net.

Then there's the random fights with midgets and Ronald McDonald wannabees, the trip to the grunge pub (and then casualty for one unlucky bloke), the comeuppance of the bloke who makes friends with fat chicks in order to shag their fit friends, and lots more laugh-worthy stuff.

And you know the worst thing? I only heard of this by chance, because my housemate saw it. It's a real crime it seems to have gone more or less unknown outside Australia.

Speaking as an Australian, I'm faintly aghast that Fat Pizza is known at all outside our borders...

Gee as an American moving to OZ with my husband...I gotta say that Aussie comedy...in general...sucks! Rarely the dry wit of British Comedy and more the annoying blend of Benny Hill kind of stuff (Think: Auntie Jack).

There are some amazing exceptions though a la Dame Edna. But for the most part, Kath & Kim and Russel Coit make my skin crawl when I'm forced to watch them on Qantas (if you look around the plane while it's on...invariably only the aussies are laughing).

I'll give you one thing, they are far less politically correct than American shows and that makes for some guilty pleasure. :)

I saw Fat Pizza last week, and I loved it. If you have a skerrick of humour in your bones, see it. (To show where I'm coming from I've recently rented Dark Angel, Chicago, Matrix2, Crackerjack and Undercover Brother.)

Pizza on TV is an absolute must see, too. Writer, star, and director Paul Fenech has an original eye and a taste for the absurd. His being attacked by cripples for using their toilet is just classic.

And get over that not-PC thing. Something's funny, it goets filmed, is Fenech's motto, and he brings it off like a one-man Marx Brothers.

John Safran and Life Support are great, too. The future of Australian comedy is is in safe hands.

fat pizza isnt about australians, its about lebanese culture in australia, and the difficulties it has etc... this isnt australian comedy at all, australian comedy is more on the lines of russel coit, mcalef, full frontal etc...
this is nothing like australian comedy... its not even done by an australian

dont take this as a bad thing, mcalef was good before it moved to a commercial channel, russel coit is good too, full frontal had some classics too, but fat pizza plays on middle eastern culture in australia. its not even made by an aussie

anyway, im just pushing that it is a different production as to what many foreigners think

It is a good TV series and movie. Though I dont know how much more the producer Paul Fenech can do it offending more parts of the community. I read that he is trying to introduce more white Anglo-Saxon characters.

The South West part of Sydney has...guns drugs, car stealing , assault, drive by shootings gang rapes. I think it both re-enforces and reflects the sterotypes of the bongers, the flannies, the youth. Paul Fenech (I think) comes from this background , though he now live in the genteel northern suburbs of Sydney.

He represents those cultures very well. By the way Annilise Braanenshek ? is a great comedy actor. She deserves better exposure.

Alright the movie was fuckin excellent right, but it has nothing to do with australian people (except maybe Davo)like it was said before its about lebanese culture IN australia not fucking australians. i live in america and i just wanted to say that its a fucking excellent movie and whoever thinks that its "aussie comedy" can go stick it where the sun dont shine for all i care. Great movie!

Wow m8! Fat pizza is one of the coolest comedys i have ever seen! I guess it's really not for those PC assholes who would turn the whole world in to a 24 hours a day mourning place where everybody cries all the time but for me it was excellent! Makes many jokes about stereotipes thats why i like it. And btw I work in a pizza place :) and like soft drugs! Though job here in Slovenia isn't as wild as the one in film. Definatlly 10 outta 10! cheers
