This year's Emmy Awards had its usual highs and lows, but it also had some extra surprises.
For example, West Wing might have been nominated for Best Drama, but it lost to Lost. The survivors of the most bizarre plane crash also saw their director J.J. Abrams win Best Director. Desperate Housewives won for Best Actress with Felicity Huffman. However, William H. Macy, Felicity's husband, lost his award after being nominated for Best Actor in a Mini-series. Still, Desperate Housewives also took home the Best Director in a Comedy Series for Charles McDougall's work.
The team from Boston did it again! No, not the Red Sox. James Spader won for Best Actor in a Drama Series. The acceptance speech was not only a loving tribute to his father, but a nod to the baseball team that won its World Series, landing in the history books. William Shatner won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
With Everyone Loves Raymond having its series finale back in May, one might expect the show to pick up an award or two. It did- Brad Garrett as Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Doris Roberts took home the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Tony Shaloub picked up a second Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Monk.
The televison community gave its nod to current events, beginning with the opening monologue by Ellen DeGeneres, who served as the host. Those who wore magnolias were showing their support for the people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Best Drama Series went to Lost. It was nice to see a new show win that category. Everybody Loves Raymond took home Best Comedy Series.
The academy recognized the contributions of the three broadcast legends, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, and the late Peter Jennings. Brokaw and Rather came out to reminisce about their years and pay tribute to Jennings.

I really thought the mood was light and playful - just what we needed.

No two critics post alike. I find it interesting that Shatner and Spader are both movie stars, yet only Spader has been in a movie (one) since Crane and Shore showed up on the small screen.
