We have reached a bittersweet time of year for television viewers and reviewers alike – the end of another season of all of our favorite shows. Whether storylines are wrapped up or events orchestrated to leave us wondering what will be the fate of our favorite characters (and guarantee that we will tune in next fall), we will all be treated to what the writers hope will be memorable episodes. FOX’s Bones is no exception.
Along with trying to solve the gruesome murder of the week and exploring the characters and characteristics of FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), and her team of squints that we have come to know and love, fans will be treated to an amusing guest appearance by Stewie Griffin from Family Guy and in the season finale, a performance by Mötley Crüe. In a recent interview, Emily Deschanel dished about her character and the closing episodes of the season, providing a few spoilers (stop reading now if you don’t want to know) and proving that although formulaic, this crime show can still surprise us.
In the episode that airs Thursday, April 30, Booth and Brennan investigate the human remains of a student found strung up in an otter mascot uniform of a rival school. Booth is also dealing with trying to help his brother Jared (guest star Brendan Fehr) find a new job after being dishonorably discharged from the Navy.
When asked about the spark between Brennan and Jared, and how it will affect her relationship with Booth, Emily said, “Let’s just say like his feelings for Brennan haven’t really died, and so there’s some dynamic there, a little bit of a love triangle that happens.” In keeping an air of mystery, Emily would not say if Brennan returns Jared’s feelings. Emily goes on to say that the relationship is not really resolved so it would make sense for Jared to show up again next season.
On May 7, human remains are found inside a barrel of wine at a wine tasting. The victim is a wine critic, who wrote such scorching reviews, everyone from the winery’s owners to the critic’s wife become suspects. Meanwhile, Brennan decides that she wants to have a baby and asks Booth to be the father. Surprise!
This is a turnaround for Brennan. She has been outspoken about not wanting children in past episodes, but Emily explained:
“You know, so many people write a script and say, well, this character is rigid, and she never changes her mind, and then they will never have her change her mind. But in real life, people do change and surprise you and, whether you like it or not, they change direction in their life sometimes. And they have contradictions… I really did like the fact that this was a woman who said she did not want children, and you don’t see that many represented very much in television or film where a woman says vocally she doesn’t want to have children. And, you know, how many times have I talked to many women who do not want children and are very happy with that choice, so I love the fact that that was represented, but I also love the fact that she’s a character who changes her mind … and you’ll see there are some twists and turns in that episode that will surprise everyone.”
