DVD Review: Wizards of Waverly Place - The Movie

Imagine enjoying a tropical family vacation in beautiful San Juan, Mexico. Add a dash of magical hijinks, a drop of adventure, and double, double, toil and trouble, you've brewed up Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.

This is not your typical witchy movie. Whether you are a fan of the Emmy Award-winning, Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place or not, this bewitching film will magically draw you in. It's a story that any family can appreciate and find value in.

Fans will appreciate that the movie features characters (and the actors who play them) from the series including Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), Justin Russo (David Henrie), and Max Russo (Jake T. Austin), three siblings with magical abilities. The three Russo sibs are wizards in training and live with their Italian-American father Jerry ( David DeLuise), a former wizard, and their Mexican-American mother, Theresa (Maria Canals Barrera), who is a mortal.

The movie shows the Russo trio getting themselves into both small mishaps and large predicaments, making you wonder what will happen next. The biggest battle that faces the young threesome is fixing a botched spell that threatens their family's existence. As I watched the film I tried to figure out what was coming next and found myself, surprisingly, on the edge of my seat.

I love that this action-packed movie is centered around mending family relationships and demonstrating that love conquers all when you work together. It's a very uplifting message for the whole family and shows wholesome values being learned that anyone can appreciate.

Throughout all of the magic and stunts that were involved, I never really stopped to think about the film quality as it was never a hindrance in my viewing pleasure. In fact, the video quality of Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, is pretty decent considering it wasn't a theatrical release.

Included in the DVD are great bonus features including: an "Insider's Exclusive - On Location," where your favorite stars reveal special effects, magical props, movie stunts, and more. The Extended Edition includes your very own "Stone of Dreams" that you can make magical wishes on, complete with a wishing guide to tell you what each color means.

In musical matters, Selena Gomez recorded four songs for the movie soundtrack including a "Magic" cover. Other Disney stars, Mitchell Musso and Aly & AJ, also contributed their voices to the soundtrack.

Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie made its television premiere on August 28, 2009 on the Disney Channel and is making its DVD debut December 15,  just in time for the holidays. So make sure you conjure a copy up!
