What do you get when you combine spies, gadgets, buddies, women, sinister villains, and the Old West? You get The Wild Wild West of course.
Secret Service agents James West (Robert Conrad) and Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin) are back for another series of missions in the Old West protecting the country from all sorts of sinister forces and managing to pick up a few girls along the way. The Wild Wild West had the right blend of action and humor as is clearly seen during this season. It's evident from their on-screen chemistry that Conrad and Martin truly enjoyed working together. The banter is often crisp and witty and helps ease some of the suspense of the missions.
This season offers fewer gadgets but equally sinister (and ultimately a little more believable) plots than the previous two seasons. It also boasts its own fair share of guest stars including a very young Robert Duvall, Ray Walston, Jack Elam (who appeared in a fair number of westerns during his career), and Edward Asner.
Although the set lacks extras, the episodes look great thanks to the digital remastering. The bolder colors employed in the costumes and set design also really stand out in this new DVD set.
The Wild Wild West was the last of the great TV western series and was unfortunately canceled in its prime after just four years on the air. Network executives said the show was too violent although by today's standards the violence doesn't seem too graphic. It's still a fun show and it will certainly remain one of the true classic TV westerns.
