DVD Review: The Ten

The Ten, a dark comedy from City Light Pictures, was released this past January with a star-studded cast of popular actors and actresses including Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, and Adam Brody. Directed by David Wain, the movie is a comical look at the Bible and the story of the Ten Commandments. However, instead of Moses, we have a guy named Jeff talking us through the commandments with different stories based on each one.

This isn't a serious look at the Bible at all. We have death, murder, mayhem, and just general chaos. Not only do we see the commandments, we also get a small peek into the life of Jeff as he goes from his wife to an affair with a younger woman and by the end of the movie all's well that ends well.

The movie itself is ten vignettes describing each of the Ten Commandments in humorous ways. Most of the characters appear in more than one story. We have a man stuck in the ground, a woman that literally finds Jesus during a summer trip in Mexico, and a doctor that does something as a joke that ends up killing his patient and has him end up in jail where he becomes the "wife" of one of the other cell mates. This really isn't light comedy, and I usually don't enjoy comedy of this type at all. Reading the cover of the DVD, I expected to be laughing non-stop. This wasn't the case. I found some of the stories funny, but not all of them. The part of the movie I liked the most was the musical number at the end.

As for the DVD itself, it contains the movie and a lot of extra features. The most notable feature to me is the outtakes, bloopers, and alternate scenes to the ones that made the final cut. There is almost an hour of extra material here alone, and I personally love seeing bloopers and outtakes. Fans will be sure to love seeing this material. There is more in addition to these cut scenes including interviews with the director, the writer, and some of the cast. A behind the scenes look at the making of the film is also included. This DVD is a good one to add to your collection if you're a fan of dark comedy.

No one will mistake Jeff Reigert (Paul Rudd) for Moses or even Charlton Heston, but they all have something in common. Like Moses and Heston, Jeff's job is to introduce the world to the Ten Commandments. ...

This was seriously one of the worst movies I've ever sat through. Awful stuff, not one good joke in the bunch.
