DVD Review: The Muppet Show: Season Two

Some of my fondest memories from when I was a kid are of sitting on the couch watching The Muppet Show. That’s why I’m so glad that the series is finally coming out on DVD, albeit rather slowly. It took two years after the first season was released for Season Two hit the shelves in 2007.

For fans like me who blew through the first set with their kids and were left wanting more, it was a long wait. Now that it’s here, it’s providing not only my nine-year-old with hours of family fun, but has also entranced my 18-month-old. The silly routines, slapstick comedy, outlandish voices, and near constant music are sure-fire kid pleasers, while the array of guest stars from the '70s and '80s will bring moms and dads a nostalgic blast from the past.

The Muppet Show Season Two guest stars include: Don Knotts, Zero Mostel, Milton Berle, Rich Little, Judy Collins, Nancy Walker, Edgar Bergen, Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, George Burns, Dom DeLuise, Bernadette Peters, Rudolf Nureyev, Elton John, Lou Rawls, Cleo Laine, Julie Andrews, Jaye P. Morgan, Peter Sellers, Petula Clark, Bob Hope, Teresa Brewer, John Cleese, and Cloris Leachman.

There are only a few special features included in this set, most of which are not that great.

  • The Muppets Valentine Special: This special episode aired on Jan. 30, 1974 and starred a very pregnant Mia Farrow. Perhaps this was a really cool extra when it aired, but today it was less than impressive. The set would have been better off without it.
  • The Muppets on the Muppets: These are short sit-down interviews with Kermit, Gonzo, Rizzo, Animal, and others that give some insight into the Muppets lives that don’t make it on camera. Some are hilarious, some, not so much.
  • Weezer and the Muppets "Keep Fishin’": Kermit, Animal, and Miss Piggy team up with Weezer for this cute music video that features the band on The Muppet Show.

By far, the episodes themselves are the best part of The Muppet Show: Season Two. Whether you want to take a walk down memory lane or introduce a piece of your childhood to a new generation, this set is definitely a keeper.
