DVD Review: The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift

The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift is fast, but not exactly as furious as the other two films in the genre. I wouldn’t have cared if Vin Diesel (who left after the first) or Paul Walker (who was thrown out after the second) had never returned to the franchise. All I ask if that you if you change the players, get some replacements that can bring it.

Lucas Black plays Sean who, like Vin’s character in the original, spends most of his time in trouble with the law. Meanwhile, he’s very handy with cars and driving them at high speeds. Sent to his strict father in Tokyo, Sean was given a curfew and a rule never to go near a car, ever. Of course, Sean breaks those rules after he runs into another American (Bow Wow) who happens to have a connection to the race car underworld. Add a girl (Nathalie Kelley) who pines for him but is attached to a mob boss, and he’s ready to go. But in order to impress Tokyo’s underworld of racing, he must learn how to drift.

Considering that this movie is attached with the Tokyo Drift sub-name, I was attempting to figure out why they would need to make a sequel here or even include a gimmick such as Drifting. The logic of it, as I understand it, is that if you learn how to drift your car can make graceful turns while racing. This looks cool perhaps when you're actually performing the stunt, but to watch for an hour or more on film felt boring to me.

The location change I understand, but not completely. For one, you don’t get to see much of it. The other, and perhaps a more racial move on their part, was to not include a love interest who is Chinese. Don’t get me wrong, the girl cast for the part was all right, but there are such things as hot women over in their country. If the producers had trouble finding one down there, I could have made some suggestions.

Please don’t feed me a line about how it wouldn’t be about the quality of the actress, because the role is very light in itself. If it’s going to be that way, at least change the ethnicity so that it can have a little flavor in the mix. I think Lucas Black would have had more intimate scenes with a Chinese girl, because he sure didn’t seem to hit (Nathalie Kelley).

I really disliked this film, not that the first two were great, but they were more entertaining.

I really like Tokyo Drift. I like the music, the driving, as well as the girls.
I love the scene at the traffic light where Han showed off his drift skills for those hot girls' numbers.
I think the reviewer isn't appreciating this movie because he/she obviously isn't into driving or cars (which doesn't have to be racing).
If you love cars/driving cars/working on your car/excited about your car, then you'll like this movie.
If you think your car purely as an instrument to get from point A to point B, then obviously dont waste your time.
