DVD Review: The Big Blue

Smithsonian Networks brings yet another fascinating look into life around us. In this edition, titled The Big Blue, viewers are taken into the underwater world of one of the world's largest animals, the Blue Whale.

As viewers sit back, relax and prepare to be introduced and educated on this great animal, they will be taken to the oceans off the coast of Australia.  What is found within the ocean's depths is mesmerizing and beautiful.  The footage shot by Smithsonian is excellent and does a fantastic job taking the viewer within the depths of the sea and all that inhabit this realm.

Along with the Blue Whale, Smithsonian also shows quite a bit about sea lions and the birds that surround the area, including a new generation of birds stretching their wings and taking flight for the first time.  Therefore, even though this DVD is titled The Big Blue, it focuses on more than just these majestically giant creatures.  Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is up to the expectations of the viewer.

I found this to be a very enjoyable and informative documentary.  The narrator does a good job explaining what is happening, where and why.  The viewer is able to travel along with the researcher as he explores from both air and boat to track and learn about the Blue Whale and its habits. Morbid as it sounds, I was particularly intrigued by the footage of the feeding habits and frenzies of the Blue Whale.  A bit on the graphic side, but incredibly interesting.

Also included in The Big Blue, is a bonus feature titled "Footprints on the Water: The Nan Houser Story" which focuses on Ms. Houser, who is an incredibly dedicated woman.  Her dedication to protecting and researching whales and dolphins is both inspiring and to be commended. I found this to be an engrossing and wonderful story.  Also keep in mind that this bonus feature runs nearly as long as the featured show of The Big Blue, which I found a bit strange, but not in a complaining or negative way.

Anyone even remotely interested in life in the sea will find The Big Blue to be an entertaining, information and enjoyable DVD.  Smithsonian has done an incredible job capturing the underwater life of not only the Blue Whale, but several other areas of sea life.   To get a sneak peek inside the feeding habits of the Blue Whale, check out the footage at the Smithsonian Channel
