From 2003 to 2006 Cartoon Network aired five seasons of Teen Titans. The show's look was heavily influenced by anime and was a bit jarring for some of its viewers, myself included. Once you got over that shock, what you got was a unique take on the comic which fans of all ages could enjoy and put their own spin on some of the storylines from their 40-plus year history in comics.
Season five gave us the episode “Go!” in which we finally learn the origins of the Titans and how they met one day and joined forces to help stop Starfire’s running amok after she escaped from a prison ship. It took five seasons but we finally learned how the team came together, which was a gutsy move waiting this long when most of the public might know who Robin is but not who the rest of the team members are.
The fifth season opens with the Titans helping Beast Boy to rescue his old team, the Doom Patrol, from the Brotherhood of Evil. They succeed, but the Brotherhood recognizes that the Titans and other young heroes are a threat to them and decide to stop them all before they can mature to full power.
The majority of the season shows the Titans on the run, either fighting the Brotherhood or trying to warn other young heroes of the danger the Brotherhood represents. Most of the season is non-stop action, where we get a larger secondary cast than ever before and anyone who was a past Titan or honorary Titan was brought back into the season at one point or another, culminating in a major battle with the Brotherhood. Episodes 11 and 12 of this 13-episode season deal with the Titans saying “no more running,” gathering their allies, and taking on the Brotherhood once and for all.
